AR Narrative Interactive Game
This is a game that combines mixed reality and escape room gameplay. Players will get a different kind of decryption experience through the Meta Quest headset.
Reflection
Working on this project allowed me to contribute to a unique and immersive game world through my 3D art, focusing on both aesthetic and functional elements. Here is my reflection on the experience:
1. Meeting the Initial Goal
I believe I successfully met the initial goal of creating 3D assets that enhanced the game’s visual storytelling and atmosphere. My contributions—such as the candles and firelight, radio, suitcase, diary fragments, and lunar phase cipher disk—were not only visually cohesive but also crucial to the gameplay. These assets supported the game’s narrative and interactive elements, aligning well with the dark and mysterious tone of the project.
2. Challenges Faced
The most challenging aspect of this experience was balancing artistic quality with technical constraints. For example:
Detail vs. Performance: Crafting visually detailed assets like the lunar phase cipher disk required balancing high-quality textures with low polygon counts to ensure smooth in-game performance.
Interactivity: Designing objects such as the candles and cipher disk to function seamlessly within the interactive environment posed technical hurdles. Integrating these assets into the engine while maintaining their intended look and functionality was particularly complex.
Creative Integration: Aligning my artistic vision with the overall game design sometimes required revisiting and reworking assets to better suit gameplay requirements, such as adjusting the scale or visual details of props to match the Meta SDK’s interaction mechanics.
Despite these challenges, the final assets were well-received by the team and contributed meaningfully to the game’s overall experience.
3. Team Collaboration
Teamwork was a vital aspect of this project. While I felt that most of the workload was fairly distributed, there were moments when I had to step in to refine or optimize assets beyond my original scope. Communication within the team was strong, which allowed us to address issues collaboratively and ensure the project stayed on track. The alignment between my work and the gameplay mechanics—such as the candle-lighting puzzle and diary fragment assembly—was a testament to this effective collaboration.
4. Personal Growth and Takeaways
This project deepened my understanding of the interplay between 3D art and gameplay mechanics. I improved my technical skills in texturing and optimizing assets for a mixed reality environment while honing my ability to adapt creatively within constraints. Additionally, seeing how my assets supported and enriched the puzzles and narrative reinforced the importance of storytelling in game design.
Conclusion
Reflecting on this project, I am proud of my contributions and the impact they had on the overall experience. By combining artistic creativity with technical precision, I was able to help create a world that felt immersive and engaging. This experience has not only sharpened my skills but also reaffirmed my passion for using 3D art to bring compelling stories to life. If given the chance, I would eagerly take on similar challenges in future projects.
